Evolution of CO on Titan

چکیده
The early evolution of Titan’s atmosphere is expected to produce enrichment in the heavy isotopomers of CO, 13CO and C18O, relative to 12C16O. However, the original isotopic signatures may be altered by photochemical reactions. This paper explains why there is no isotopic enrichment in C in Titan’s atmosphere, despite significant enrichment of heavy H, N, and O isotopes. We show that there is a rapid exchange of C atoms between the CH4 and CO reservoirs, mediated by the reaction CH2 + ∗CO → 1∗ CH2 + CO, where ∗C is 13C. Based on recent laboratory measurements, we estimate the rate coefficient for this reaction to be 3.2 × 10−12 cm3 s−1 at the temperature appropriate for the upper atmosphere of Titan. We investigate the isotopic dilution of CO using the Caltech/JPL one-dimensional photochemical model of Titan. Our model suggests that the time constant for isotopic exchange through the above reaction is about 800 Myr, which is significantly shorter than the age of Titan, and therefore any original isotopic enhancement of 13C in CO may have been diluted by the exchange process. In addition, a plausible model for the evolution history of CO on Titan after the initial escape is proposed. c © 2002 Elsevier Science (USA)

CO2 on Titan
A sharp stratospheric emission feature at 667 cm -• in the Voyager infrared spectra of Titan is associated with the •'2 Q branch of CO2. A coupling of photochemical and radiative transfer theory yields an average mole fraction above the 110 mbar level of fco2 1.5 + 2.5 -9 = -o.8X 10 , with most of the uncertainty being due to imprecise knowledge of the vertical distribution. CO2 is found to be ...
متن کاملInfestations of Piagetiella titan (Menoponidae: Mallophaga) on juvenile white pelicans (Pelecanus nocrotalus, L.) in Urmia Lake National Park, northwest Iran.
Pelecaniformes are large water birds feeding by hunting fish and living usually in the sea and in fresh water. Ectoparasitic lice of the genus Piagetiella are interesting from an ecological standpoint as they are found in the pouches of pelicans. Unlike chewing lice, which live on the body surface of the host, P. titan lives in the oral cavity of white pelicans (Pelecanus nocrotalus, L.). This ...
متن کاملCo on Titan: More Evidence for a Well-mixed Vertical Profile
We report new interferometric observations of the CO (2 − 1) rotational transition on Titan. We find that the spectrum is best fit by a uniform profile of 52 ppm, with estimated errors of 6 ppm (40 to 200 km) and 12 ppm (200 to 300 km).
متن کاملStructure and Evolution of the Saturn’s Subnebula – Implications for the Formation of Titan
Introduction: Recent models of giant planets formation include migration in a solar nebula whose evolution is ruled through viscosity and photoevaporation [1]. These models allow to form planets in a timescale well within observed disks lifetimes. Here, we utilize some results presented on Saturn formation [2] to calculate the structure of its surrounding subnebula, in a way consistent with the...
